Robert Downey jr. aka Iron Man himself, says that Iron Man could return down the road in the MCU. Some people are celebrating and some people are taking it as a rumor.
Before we get into this, Let me remind you that before Captain America: Civil War happened in the MCU, Robert Downey jr. was done as Iron Man. MCU didn't even know if Robert Downey jr. would be back. They were just writing a script without him and if he signs on They will work it out.
But this time, he's dead as Iron Man as we have seen in Avengers Endgame. So, let's talk about that.
Recently, Robert Downey jr. gave a statement "Yeah, anything could happen. I’m really enjoying…" Downey said before his wife interjected. He continued, "As far as I’m concerned, I hung up my guns and I’m good to let it go. I also think Marvel is on this journey now and they’re trying a bunch of other stuff, and I’m excited for them to see how all that goes. It’s hard to project."
So he never confirms that he's coming back. He says he could come back, but he doesn't know.
Kevin Feige in the past has also said, they will use Iron Man, Like the casting of James Bond, Where somebody else could take on the role. This is possible in MCU by bringing in the Multiverse, they could literally jump into another Multiverse and have another actor playing Tony Stark who's alive.
And if people like it enough, they can bring them over into the main continuity.
Furthermore, whether they bring back that version or not remains to be seen.
Now they are making a Black Widow, it's another prequel before she dies and Tony Stark was still alive. So they can use him there. We can also see him in flashbacks of the next Spider-Man movie.
Now If MCU wants to bring him back, they can. The Character is dead and that is the truth, but things could always change down the road and when Secret Wars happens, He'll be back for sure.
